Swimmers Nutrition Survey Summary
Survey monkey was a quick and easy method to survey swimmers about their views on nutrition and I was able to send the link to a wide variety of them. The responses that I got were incredibly helpful and they have helped in the shaping of my website and when deciding the content. Swimmers input was the most valued as they are the target audience of the site.
Question 1:
It was found that most swimmers had a good understanding of the required nutritional information for the sport but not a comprehensive amount which is why a website would be useful for them to fill in the gaps in their knowledge to aid with ensuring peak performance.
Question 2:
The majority of survey participants obtained their nutritional information from their coaches and parents. Coaches are probably the more reliable source for their information; however, parents are the people who budget the purchasing of foods and also are the main people to prepare the meals so to get a balance between the two views would be essential for the finished product.
Question 3:
In general, it was discovered that swimmers would like to obtain more information on nutritional requirements which is the result that I hoped to get and it was also found that most do not adhere to a specific diet for their swimming, meaning a website presenting guidelines and recommendations would be more widely used and appreciated. Most participants who do adhere to a diet said that they believe that they have benefited from having the stricter eating plans so if I can devise a proper meal plan, this could aid in the development of the performance of swimmers. Also over half of the swimmers believed that they would benefit from having a set meal plan which is something that I will include in the final product. Only a quarter of the participants cook their own meals so perhaps recipes will not need to feature as heavily in the final website as I had originally planned, however, I can modify what is in the finished product to suit this. also, over three quarters of the participants of the survey said that they would use a website dedicated to nutritional advice for young swimmers which is good as I now know that my finished product will be used and hopefully appreciated by other swimmers.
Question 4:
For most swimmers, the diet that they are on is mainly healthy eating and that helps with maintaining fitness. There are no specific diets that are commonly used amongst young swimmers that I could research for my project. The healthy eating plans are commonly given from coaches and dieticians.
Question 5:
The main thing that swimmers who are currently on diets are targeting is muscle gain followed closely behind by weight loss. These two goals from diets will be what the meal plans that I produce are mainly centred around. They are the main issues that swimmers seem to be focussing on so I will defiantly incorporate these options into my finished product.
Question 6:
The types of meals that most swimmers prefer to eat, or usually eat are mainly just healthy dishes, with protein and carbohydrates that are fairly low in fat. Most didn’t really have a preference as to the specifics of the meal so any recipes that are included in the final product will be a variety of meals and recipes.
Question 7 and 8:
The purpose of questions seven and eight was to see the differences between the foods that people like to eat and the foods that help them or they feel benefit their performance in training and competition. Pasta dishes, water and sports drinks were the most common between the two categories. People also said that protein shakes and fruit helped them a lot and all of the listed foods were foods that swimmers liked to eat but not ones that necessarily helped them. The comparisons are listed in the graphs above.
Question 9:
From question nine I found that most swimmers have less than an hour prior to the meal for preparation time meaning any recipes or meal suggestions need to be fairly quick and easy to cook. It was also discovered that most people don’t spend a whole lot on groceries per week so all suggestions and recommendations cannot be too expensive.
Question 10:
The order in which swimmers regarded aspects of nutrition starting with the most important goes as follows: Competition nutrition, Recommended foods, Meal plans, Training nutrition, Hydration recommendations, Recipes, Nutritional requirements and food intake, Information about eating issues, Information for people with dietary requirements. This is the order that I will prioritise the aspects and include in my final product.

Website Evaluation Survey Summary
I sent the link to the website that I created and the link to the website evaluation survey to a variety of people within my target age group who are both swimmers and non-swimmers and also both males and females. The main aim of this survey was to collect feedback from people on their opinions of the website and also to identify any areas that could use improvement as it is difficult for me as the creator to identify them. The feedback and comments that I received from each of the ten participants who chose to complete my survey was mostly positive and any criticism that I received was constructive and I was able to learn from it and also make the alterations needed to make the website better.
The main things that people said in response to the question“what do you like about the website and why?” was that it was very professional looking yet simple with straight forward, quality and useful information. It was mainly presentation however; that the participants thought was the best feature of the website.
Adding more pictures and diagrams were the components that the survey participants thought needed to be added to the website when they were asked “what did you like least about the website and why? Can you suggest ways that I can improve on it?” I agree with them that the webpage is lacking in visual representation and will most defiantly try to fix that and add more pictures to make the page more appealing and user friendly.
Question three asked survey participants to rate components of the website in accordance to how they viewed them. Ease of access, presentation and ease of use were all rated highly with 100% of participants answering yes to weather the webpage was easy to access, easy to use and well presented. Eight out of the ten responses said that they would recommend the website to other elite young swimmers and seven out of ten said that the information was easy to understand. Almost all of participants said that to some degree they learnt from the published information which was my initial goal at the beginning of the project and again most said that they agreed with the information to some extent. All participants either answered yes or somewhat when asked whether or not they liked the colours and layout/themes of the website and nine of the ten participants answered yes or somewhat to the question “would you consider using this information when planning your own diet?” These results were mostly
positive and they indicated that overall people learned from, liked and appreciate the website.
Only one of the participants answered not really or no to any of the questions in question three and that is because they did not feel that the information was relevant to them as they are not a swimmer. They were however, able to provide feedback on the presentation and design aspects which was helpful.
When asked for any other comments or feedback on the website all of the survey participants gave positive feedback and encouragement for the website. I was especially pleased to learn that one swimmer is planning on taking my suggested meal plan into consideration when planning their diet. Overall I found that most of the people that I surveyed liked the website and that they found the information was well put together and presented. I will definitely improve on the areas that were mentioned to be lacking and hopefully improve on the overall website so that elite young swimmers can get the most out of the information.
