Nutritional RequirementsEnergy Requirements
A high energy diet is needed by swimmers to accommodate high energy demands of training. Failing to meet these requirements results in failure to recover between sessions and fatigue, weight loss and poor performance (PBA Swimming Nutrition, 2011). 3000 calories or more daily is recommended for young elite swimmers as they also have the added requirements from growth and development during adolescence. Energy is predominantly sourced from carbohydrates but proteins and fats are slower burning energy and can be stored as energy reserves for other needs (Cara Zolinsky, 2012). A high energy diet rich in cabohydrates is essential for recovery as well as energy for training and competition. |
